balance
- equilibrium; the ability for the body to
remain stable under ordinary or extraordinary circumstances
- stationary balance:
stability in a stationary position, whether on one leg, on an unstable
surface, or with perturbations (pushing on the body from another person,
such as while standing in a crowd)
- dynamic balance: stability
in a moving position, whether stepping, bounding, or hopping onto one leg,
involving an unstable surface, obstacles, or perturbations
PROPRIOCEPTION
- sensory awareness of a part of the body
in space, particularly an extremity (arm or leg)
- goes hand in hand with balance, allowing
the body to maintain stability on the ground (legs) or in the air (arms) or
against resistance such as athletic opponents or objects to be lifted
overhead (arms)
- using proprioceptive exercises for
shoulder stability is crucial for overhead throwing or lifting activities
where the rotator cuff muscle group needs to be strong to properly stabilize
the shoulder's ball & socket joint
