MUSCLE STRAINS
What is it?
varying degrees of tearing in muscle fibers
1st degree: "minimal" strain; tearing of a minute amount of fibers; minimal symptoms of pain, swelling, bruising, tenderness, and loss of strength
2nd degree: "moderate" strain; tearing of a moderate amount of fibers; moderate symptoms of pain, swelling, bruising, tenderness, and loss of strength
3rd degree: "severe" strain; complete rupture in the muscle; severe symptoms of pain, swelling, bruising, tenderness, with palpable divot in the muscle, and a lack of muscle function
How's it happen?
a sudden over-stretch or contraction usually occurring during a ballistic movement
propagated by a lack of flexibility, lack of strength, improper warm-up or cool-down, or incorrect biomechanics
What do you do about it?
depends on the severity (degree)
gentle stretching, ice, & anti-inflammatories
treatment, rehab, & return to activity functional program (focused on regaining flexibility, mobility, & strength)
